Ohio Award-winning author and photographer David FitzSimmons, Ph.D., taught for 20+ years in elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as college (Ashland University, The Ohio State University, Cornell University), before becoming a full-time writer, artist, and presenter. His Curious Critters children’s picture books have won more than a dozen national book awards, including IBPA’s Best Picture Book Award, and have sold over 200,000 copies. His nonfiction title, “Salamander Dance,” chronicles the annual life cycle of spotted salamanders and vernal pools. He also authored the visually astounding book Animals of Ohio’s Ponds and Vernal Pools, David regularly presents to groups ranging from conferences to schools.

If You Build It, They Will Come:
Vernal Pools, Fauna, & Fun!"

David FitzSimmons will share his experiences studying, photographing, and writing about vernal pools. Learn about the ecology of these ephemeral wetlands, as well as the natural history of their inhabitants. David will explain how you can build your own environmentally responsible vernal pool and read pages from his new children's picture book Salamander Dance. Enjoy underwater photos and watch videos documenting the annual spring migration of amphibians.

Betsy Colburn

Author, scientist, educator, naturalist keynotes on Friday April 5th.

Dr. Colburn is an aquatic ecologist who has spent much of her career studying, teaching about, and working for the protection of vernal pools and other small wetlands in the formerly glaciated northeastern United States. She worked for Massachusetts Audubon for eighteen years and is presently based at the Harvard Forest in Petersham, Massachusetts. Betsy is author of Vernal Pools, the most comprehensive and substantive book available on the natural history, ecology and conservation of the myriad small, transient, biologically dynamic pools that appear in low-lying areas, especially in spring, and that typically disappear as the seasons progress. She is particularly passionate about the wide variety of invertebrates that can be found in vernal pools.

Puddles and Pools, Problems and Puzzles:
What do we Know about Vernal Pools, and
What Questions Remain?

Vernal Pools defy simple definitions – the range of flooding regimes, locations within the landscape, basin characteristics, adjacent and in-pool plant communities, and animal species that can be found in vernal pools is remarkably broad. This talk will explore the variety of vernal pools and their wildlife, look at some aspects of their natural history, address a number of questions and consider some recent advances in our knowledge, and identify a few areas where our understanding is still limited – and where citizen-scientists can contribute to advancing knowledge
Vernal Poolooza is Ohio Wetlands Association spring wetlands science conference. It will be held at the Ashland University Convocation Center on April 4, 5 & 6, 2019. Our experience with vernal pool workshops and expeditions have led to plenty of conversations with naturalists, environmental educators, scientists and many people who are general curious about seasonal wetlands. From this we have determined that people want to know more and to do more than we can fit into our single-day workshop framework.

We are preparing a variety of breakout sessions that should add up to dozens of presentations on a variety of topics that past workshop participants have asked about. We will have our 5 basic workshop presentations for those who have not been to one lately. These will include vernal pool; overview, plants, amphibians, macroinvertebrates and monitoring using iNaturalist. Some topics of other sessions are; FrogWatch USA Citizen Science, Taking Photos with your iPhone, Ohio Environmental Education Fund Small Grants, Learning Techniques in the Sounds of Ohio’s Frogs and Toads, Vernal Pools with Odonates in Mind. Details of confirmed presentations are HERE.
